The Red Flag Green Flag® People Personal Safety Program has provided personal safety skills information to over 1,000,000 children worldwide since 1980.
These materials teach children, ages 5 to 8, how to recognize abusive situations, especially sexual abuse. Through a 30-page workbook, children learn about appropriate and inappropriate kinds of touches—Green Flag touches and Red Flag touches. They learn how to recognize abusive situations, assertive responses, and who their helpers are. Role-playing is recommended.
Although the workbook was originally designed for teaching children in classroom or group settings, social service, legal and medical professionals have found it to be valuable as well. When used with a child on an individual basis, the book helps to produce a discussion that is comfortable for both the child and the adult.
The facilitator’s guide walks through each page, including discussion questions and related activities. For classroom presentation purposes, there is a program overview, teacher and parent meeting outlines, sample consent forms, and roleplay scenarios.
