I Wish The Hitting Would Stop --- CHILDREN’S WORKBOOK

Product Description
Domestic Violence Education Program
The original I Wish The Hitting Would Stop
workbook was written for working with
children who are living in homes where
there is domestic violence. The new I
Wish The Hitting Would Stop education
program for the 4th or 5th grade classroom
was written to educate all children in the
classroom about the issue of domestic
violence, regardless of whether or not
there is violence in their own homes.
Through this education program, children will learn what domestic
violence is and how it may affect children living in homes where
there is domestic violence. They will learn that the violence
between other people is not their fault and they will learn skills
for dealing constructively with their own feelings. Realizing it is
not always possible or safe to try and stop violence, children will
learn ways to try to keep themselves safe and to identify people
they can go to for help. The skills learned will be applicable to
other incidences of violence, not just domestic violence. Children
will also learn how they can be helpful and supportive to a friend
who is living in a home where there is domestic violence.
The education program includes a 30-page student workbook,
an 86-page facilitator’s guide with presentation helps, and a
two-part video. One portion of the video, 31 minutes in length,
is to be viewed by teachers, school counselors, and school
administrators, and contains information on domestic violence
and its effects on children as well as suggestions on how to help
children witnessing domestic violence. The second part of the
video, 13 minutes in length, is for viewing by children in the
classroom. It discusses domestic violence and emphasizes the
importance of finding and telling someone who can help. Both
video portions feature child and adolescent witnesses and
survivors of domestic violence from the Rape and Abuse Crisis
Center of Fargo-Moorhead as well as presentations by Sarah Buel,
J.D., Clinical Professor, University of Texas School of Law, and Mark
Wynn, a retired police officer with the Nashville Police Department’s
Domestic Violence Unit. Both Sarah and Mark are child and/or
adult witnesses and survivors of domestic violence themselves.
The I Wish The Hitting Would Stop domestic violence education
program was presented at the 10th National Conference of the
National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
